May 1st celebrations in Serbia

Belgrade, May 01, 2010 (Serbia Today) - It use to be that biggest state holidays in Serbia. This year it falls on Saturday, so Serbian workers will have long holiday weekend and will go back to work on Tuesday. However, no official Workers May Parades will happen this year. Labor Unions either don’t have funds to organize one, or are to busy organizing one of many workers strikes going on at the moment in various companies throughout Serbia. Some are even questioning if workers class still exists in Serbia. According to official statistics there is about 1.8 million working people out of which more than a half are employed in public services or government and other state agencies. Traditionally, a term “working class” is used for those employed in the industrial sector, which makes more than a half of working people ineligible to call themselves working class. Happy holiday.
